Well, it's about 2 weeks later, but I am just getting caught up. Some barriers that I face in improving family-school-community partnerships is that often times, each entity is available at very different times. Teachers have a very small window during the day, community partnerships vary and many families aren't able to meet until after the work day. The use of FaceTime, texting, email and home/work visits help to connect the dots with some of the families.

I would say one of the biggest barriers for our family engagement is: 1.)A general understanding all of the resources available. 2.)Compiling a list of the ones willing to help promote or engage certain needs within out community. 3.)Finding a example of a successful model to build off of in order to maximize the amount of time we are able to spend on family engagement planning.

I actually have not had an issues improving partnerships! It takes TIME! I go to many meetings at all hours of the day but it is the only way to connect with the community! I am lucky to have flex time with my district so I can get to the different meetings. It took me all last school year to meet many of the organizations, but this year it is paying off and we are forming great two-way relationships....they are helping me and I am helping them!

What are some barriers that you face in improving family-school-community partnerships in your organization? Our parents are working two jobs to support their families. Time is an issue. Many of my students stay after school in order to be able to participate in extra curricular activities. We have increased participation over the past few years. We have sought out ways to include parents in a non-traditional way. Social media is a big factor in communicating with parents as well as students.
We have several parent nights and activities. I have required each school to have a minimum of 4 nights that invite parents in outside of the traditional parent/teacher nights. We have decent participation.

Hello! I hope everyone enjoyed Thanksgiving with their families. In reflecting on my family's holiday, I started to think about how we engage the families we work with and how we measure that engagement. I wrote about this in my blog and used the story of my family's Thanksgiving dinner to share the importance of using the voices of our stakeholders when evaluating our engagement efforts. Here are the highlights: My Grandpa is 89 years old and wonderfully funny, charming, loving, and generous. He has recently been struggling with severe back pain, so we decided to host Thanksgiving at his house this year. Despite the usual chaos of making sure everything is cooked and ready for the family's arrival, this year's Thanksgiving had a different feel to it. Mostly, this was because my Grandpa was SO HAPPY. For him, nothing is better than having his family around, and everyone being at his house for the holiday brightened his spirits more than anything any of us had tried over the past few weeks. If we had used traditional or simply quantitative measures to evaluate our Thanksgiving dinner, we would have missed the biggest impact of all -- the joy it brought to my Grandpa and all of us. What beautiful outcomes are we missing in schools when we fail to capture stakeholder voices and perspectives? Read the full post here: www.structuredsolutionsllc.org/blog/evaluating-our-thanksgiving-dinnerIf your school or district is struggling to tell the story of its impact on families, I'd love to chat with you!
